Identifying efficient crime combating policies by VAR-estimations: The example of Switzerland
نویسندگان
چکیده
Current research suggests that the crime-combating instrument ”sentence probability” is more effective than ”sentence severity”. However, the focus of the simultaneous (or very short-run) impact of the law enforcement policy on crime impedes a comparison of these two instruments with respect to their long-term effectiveness. With Swiss data, we investigate the dynamic interrelationships between enforcement policy and crime and find that overall, sentence severity is just as effective as sentence probability (and even more effective for certain crimes). Furthermore, we show how the VAR-modeling technique can be exploited to conveniently distinguish between deterrence and incapacitation effects. Therefrom, concrete recommendations for a cost-effective crime-reduction policy can be derived. Patricia Funk & Peter Kugler, WWZ (Department of Economics), Petersgraben 51, CH-4003 Basel. Identifying the Environmental Factors Contributing to the Occurrence of Crime and Anomic Behavior (Case Study: Urban Deteriorated Spaces of Borazjan City)
Cities, as the focused centers for human residence and settlement, are faced with various issues and problems. The high rate of crime and anomic behavior are characteristics of today’s major cities. Fear of crime and anomic behavior is perceived as the most important reasons leading to a decline in the use of public spaces in cities by its residents. According to the mutual relation between env...
متن کاملCombating organized crime: A study on undercover policing and the follow-the-money strategy
Empirical research on organized crime policies is scarce. As a consequence, debates and policies lack a firm empirical basis and are mainly based upon normative grounds and untested assumptions. The aim of this study is to contribute to the empirical evidence by giving insight into the practice and results of two counterstrategies to organized crime in the Netherlands: the criminal justice appr...

متن کاملLikelihood Ratio Tests of Restrictions on Common Trends Loading Matrices in I(2) VAR Systems
Likelihood ratio tests of over-identifying restrictions on the common trends loading matrices in I(2) VAR systems are discussed. It is shown how hypotheses on the common trends loading matrices can be translated into hypotheses on the cointegration parameters. Algorithms for (constrained) maximum likelihood estimation are presented, and asymptotic properties sketched. The techniques are illustr...
